What Moved Beneath the Hull

The crew went looking for water and metal. The thing that found them had been waiting beneath their own ship.

This is a dramatic adaptation of actual play. It preserves the session's decisions, corrected rolls, injuries, and consequences while compressing table talk. Unresolved ore chemistry, uncertain speaker ownership, and an unconfirmed prey theory remain out of the story.

No Magnetic North

The Anne Bonny repair team and four-seat survey vehicle separating at Quarry Terrace

The Anne Bonny began day twenty-three leaning on a repaired promise. Bob and Clauydio had the landing gear propped, not healed. The outer sensors had survived the rain but no longer agreed about where the horizon ended. Preferred launch remained day forty-two. Day forty-five remained the point after which preference no longer mattered.

Anne Bonny stands slightly canted on pale mineral ground while two suited figures work at one outrigger and a four-seat survey vehicle waits near the ramp Bob torques a temporary brace while Clauydio routes sensor cable above him using the gravity-assist frame

They split the work. Bob and Clauydio stayed with the ship to straighten the gear, recalibrate the sensors, and build the antennas they would need above the mineral flats. Elias, Victor, Kari, and Jin packed the four-seat vehicle with a probe, a chemistry deck, water, and enough line to retrieve a scientist who mistook curiosity for footing.

Elias locks down a probe drone, compact chemistry deck, water cases, tether reels, and four seats as Kari checks the sample rack A gloved hand adjusts the vehicle display while the Anne Bonny remains fixed on the horizon beyond the windshield

Green Reach II supplied no magnetic north. The ship became their local anchor: nineteen on the navigation check, a hard reference against which every tire track and radio return could be measured. Jin drove south through marsh that looked level until the suspension found each hidden channel.

The vehicle follows its first dark tire line south through shallow marsh while the repair team becomes small beneath the ship Jin eases the vehicle over a hidden marsh channel while Victor watches the horizon and Kari monitors the probe

The crew treated most hexes as passage, not discovery. They drove, probed, marked, and kept moving. A proper survey would consume half a day; a first look could tell them where half a day was worth spending. Their ambitious ridgeline proved several days away. The world was larger than their deadline.

At the edge of drier scrub, something exhaled through the ground.

The Rock That Snapped

A scald slab venting steam and brackish water over pale mineral scrub

From a distance it looked like a pale slab resting above a hot seep. Up close it became a three-and-a-half-meter organism: seated over the vent, hinged like an immense clam, breathing heat and thin ooze through a seam that opened and shut with deliberate force.

A pale three-and-a-half-meter slab appears propped over steaming ground, its low edge exhaling vapor above a fringe of short supports Kari remains tethered to the survey vehicle Ebb while she extends a remote sample arm toward the hinge side of the slab and Elias stays nearby

Kari approached on a tether and sent the sampler toward the hinge. The slab snapped. The container caught drippings. It snapped again. The thing did not turn or pursue; whatever it was doing, it belonged to one place.

The pale shell snaps shut just behind the sample cup as hot thin ooze spatters its transparent lid Victor turns toward a sudden tremor while vapor around the slab stops and water dimples outward across the mineral crust

The warning came from the ground. Victor saw the pressure change first. The crew cleared the seam as scalding brackish water burst through the organism and sheeted across the mineral crust. Steam erased the vehicle. When the air cleared, the slab remained above a continuing hot-water vent.

Scalding brackish water erupts through and around the slab as all four crew dive or scramble clear and the tether snaps taut The crew regroups beside the vehicle while hot water continues flowing beneath the slab into shallow mineral channels

The water was mineral-rich, mildly alkaline, and potable after ordinary treatment. More slabs stood across the scrub, each associated with a hot seep. The crew had found not one curiosity but a field: water and geothermal energy close enough to the landing area to matter to a settlement.

Several separate pale slab forms rise above vapor plumes across the same low geothermal field

Back at the vehicle, Victor ate the moss. Green tasted like rubbery kale; red like rubbery beet. The result was a serving of alien vegetables and no more than the digestive objection expected from unfamiliar food. On Green Reach II, even field science had an aftertaste.

Game day 24 · Near-ship survey

Everything Small Enough to Miss

Kari sampling a living alien shoreline beside the survey vehicle

Day twenty-four bought the ship another repair shift and the field team a shorter route. They stayed near the Anne Bonny, trading distant ridges for shoreline water and whatever lived where marsh met shallows.

Kari compares sealed hot-water and moss samples while Victor chews a small strip of green rubbery growth with measured regret On day twenty-four the vehicle stops where pale marsh enters shallow brackish water and the crew deploys bottles, probes, and a sample grid

The first hour overturned the orbital phrase no major fauna. Small amphiboids broke the surface. Bugs and slug-like grazers worked the wet margins. A triangular animal the size of a crab came up clinging to the probe by its single oversized pincer. The crew planned to keep it as a live sample.

The shoreline was not empty background between larger discoveries. It was an ecosystem at the scale the first survey had filtered out: movement under leaves, tracks in sludge, chemistry passing between mud and shell.

Farther inland, a metallic outcrop defeated the hand tools. A strong strike did not break it; it dulled the tool. Elias found a diamond-carbide core rig in the inventory, and the crew spent an hour earning one sample from material that had refused every shortcut.

A hand tool strikes the metal and blunts at the edge while Victor and Elias watch the unchanged surface Elias braces a diamond-carbide core rig as coolant runs and a narrow plug finally separates from the outcrop

They did not identify the metal in the field. The sample went back to the ship with six hours of analysis ahead of it. The record kept the uncertainty. A hard unknown was more useful than a convenient answer.

Then Kari heard two dry clicks over the radio.

Customer States There Is Movement

The camouflaged clickshade dropping from beneath the Anne Bonny onto Bob

At first the clicking sounded like repair noise. Bob and Clauydio paused beneath the ship. Cameras showed static, mineral scale, and two suited crew members exactly where the motion system expected them. Proximity alerts had been quieted while people worked outside. Nothing registered as out of the ordinary because the ordinary already moved.

Bob and Clauydio unhook their tethers and turn toward the ship's shadow, surrounded by braces, cables, and landing feet External views show Bob, landing hardware, and mineral static but no third moving silhouette

Bob unhooked his tether and walked deeper under the hull with shield and wrench ready. Clauydio checked the live feeds. The field team turned the vehicle around and accelerated across their own tire path.

Jin accelerates hard along the established tire path as Kari holds the radio and Victor braces over the dashboard A four-meter clickshade drops from the hull onto Bob, its copied plating peeling into a violet-charcoal ripple across exactly four limbs and a hooked wedge head

The background came down on Bob.

Four meters of low quadruped unfolded from the Anne Bonny's skin. Its camouflage kept matching the hull as it began to move, but a violet-charcoal update ripple made the false plating detectable as muscle and a broad armored head. The first impact pinned Bob beneath its weight. Nine points of damage became four spent Fortune after his suit and toughness did what they could.

A lower bone hook catches Bob's suit and body position as the clickshade lifts him under its chest and turns toward open scrub Kari tries to launch the compact probe from the moving vehicle and it immediately tumbles nose-first into mud beside the tire track

A bone hook caught him when the creature struck again. It lifted him against the underside of its body and began to leave. The predator did not posture or trade threats. It had selected one thing and was trying to carry it away.

The returning vehicle was still a hex out. The fight began without most of the crew.

Getting Bob Back

Victor cutting Bob free of the clickshade's bone hook beneath the ship

Kari tried to launch the probe from the moving vehicle. It dropped into the mud. Jin braced the long rifle against a suspension that refused to become a firing platform and took the first shot he could justify.

Clauydio locks both arms around Bob's harness and plants the exoframe against the ground while the clickshade pulls the opposite way Bob rises inside the mechanical suit and drives a heavy tool into the clickshade's shoulder, forcing the half-ton body two meters sideways

The table called fourteen against Defense fourteen a miss. Later, the ruling was corrected: the shot had hit the clickshade, and its damage belonged on the predator. The correction mattered. So did the next shot, which missed the creature and struck Bob while he was still tangled against it.

The clickshade lunges back through the ripple and hooks Bob a second time, lifting him as the mechanical suit twists under the load The survey vehicle slews to a stop as Victor, Kari, and Jin dismount into a clear line toward the clickshade and Clauydio

Clauydio reached the hold first. His initial grapple barely pulled Bob free. Bob answered with a heavy blow that hit for thirteen and shoved the predator back. It returned, drove the hook through him again, and left him injured, wounded, and exhausted before the rest of the vehicle stopped.

The armor-piercing round took the last of Bob's mitigation. He became dying with six rounds between him and an ending no one wanted to record.

An armor-piercing round tears past the moving clickshade and strikes Bob's already damaged suit while he remains entangled Clauydio's second grapple slides off the camouflaged hide while Kari's hurried shot strikes mineral ground beyond it

Clauydio missed the next grapple. Kari's shot went wide. The clickshade kept withdrawing with Bob. Victor crossed the distance with a sword, remembered the last point on his attack, and turned a fourteen with four stunt points into the opening they needed.

The disarm stunt did not remove the creature's weapon. It removed Bob from it. Victor threw him six meters clear and put nine damage into the thing holding him.

Kari and Elias stabilizing Bob after the point-defense strike

Clauydio brought the Anne Bonny's point-defense cannon online with the crew inside its identification envelope. The weapon was built to erase incoming ship-killers, not solve a problem under the landing gear. At personal scale, two dice became one hundred ten damage.

Clauydio's gloved hand enables the Anne Bonny point-defense system while friendly IFF indicators surround six human silhouettes One PDC mount snaps down and fires beneath the hull, the muzzle event overwhelming the small human-scale scene without striking the landing gear

Victor caught eleven points in the blast and spent Fortune to stay standing. The clickshade ceased to be a combatant and became a field of samples. The intact head was the largest useful piece the cannon left them.

Victor remains standing inside drifting tissue and dust while the clickshade is reduced beyond recovery and Bob lies clear several meters away An intact broad clickshade head with bone hooks rests in a sealed field tray beside scorched fragments and a sample scanner

Bob was still dying. Elias and Kari grabbed the medical kit and ran. They reached him with rounds remaining, held pressure around the puncture, sealed what could be sealed in the field, and stopped the clock. He stayed conscious, wounded, and bound for the autodoc.

Elias holds pressure around Bob's puncture while Kari sprays sealant and wraps the damaged suit and wound with the open medical kit between them Clauydio and Bob's empty work station face a revised motion display that separates six tagged human traces from one distinct additional-motion shape

The log called it the kebab incident: afternoon, day twenty-four. The joke survived because Bob did.

Afterward, the crew reprogrammed the motion system. It would continue to recognize tagged people outside the ship, but it would no longer flatten every additional movement into the same harmless background. The first attempt cost more time. The next one worked.

Preferred launch remained eighteen days away. Beneath the Anne Bonny, the ordinary hull had become one more thing the cameras would have to question.

Hull mimic

A low four-meter ambush predator whose skin copied the hull at rest and continued matching the ground while moving slowly, although motion made it detectable. It pinned and hooked Bob, tried to withdraw with him, and was killed by the Anne Bonny's point-defense cannon. Its preferred prey remains unknown.
