What the Mountain Kept

The road led to a machine. The live cable led to a rescue. The tools waited at the other end.

2026-10-10Anne BonnyActual-play adaptation

An illustrated adaptation of the October 10 session. Connective description and compressed travel preserve the recorded choices, samples, rescue, restart and discoveries. The plant is geothermal. The crew's language interpretation remains tentative, and the maintenance device has not yet been connected to the factory.

Beyond the broken crust · Rocky approach

A Meal at a Distance

A Sholow pursues a yellow-faced Quintly while its partner remains beside a geyser clam.

Ebb and Flo left the broken ground behind. The opening full of root jacks remained a place the crew had seen enough of. Victor, Kari, Clauydio, and Jin continued toward the pale rocky outcrop, keeping their vehicles on the ground that still carried them. Bob was recovering aboard the Anne Bonny; Elias remained there with the ship.

Another field of the great clam-like forms occupied the approach. Geysers broke the quiet around them. The lower rock shelf looked accessible to the survey vehicles, while the higher ground promised a slower journey on foot. Brown movement near one of the clams brought the expedition to a halt before anyone drove into it.

They watched through optics and a reconnaissance drone. Two tawny animals moved around the clam, long-legged and broad-nosed, their heads carrying flattened horn plates. Kari could find something of a pronghorn in their bodies, but that resemblance did not settle what they ate. Victor kept the drone above the pair and clear of the geysers.

One animal stopped with its attention fixed. The other worked around the clam's base. A much smaller creature appeared on the far side: dark legs beneath a swollen pale body, yellow material across its face. Then the waiting animal ran. It caught the smaller one a short distance away, bit and shook it, and brought the kill back.

A round-bodied Quintly flees a clam with a Sholow closing behind.

The two predators lay down together and divided the meal. Sholow and Quintly gave the crew names for the relationship they had just observed. The yellow coating still had no chemical identity; the predator's speed and its prey had a much more immediate one. Kari kept the observation without making it an invitation to collect either animal.

The UTVs gave the clam field a wide berth. As the vehicles came nearer, the pair noticed them. One took the remainder of the meal and both withdrew. The crew continued toward the rock without firing, without pursuing, and with a new line in their survey: here was something that ate something else, and had chosen to leave them alone.

Slab shelter · Remote sampling

Fire Beneath the Slab

A fire seal spits burning fluid onto a sampler tip while the intact drone hovers above its rock shelter.

The plateau offered two discoveries in different directions. There was a great circular mouth in the rock, and there was movement beneath a slab nearer the approach. The crew split their attention between them, sending reconnaissance toward the opening and the sampling drone toward the smaller uncertainty.

Its lights found a pale, smooth animal lying under the tilted stone. It was roughly small-seal-sized, with a broad mouth and dark material marking the ground in front of it. The creature did not look built for pursuit. Kari wanted the residue, which was a more useful question than whether its stillness meant it was safe.

The drone stayed above the slab while its sampling arm reached down over the edge. The position protected the body, but brought the tip into the animal's reach. Fluid came from its mouth and ignited. A brief orange fire struck the arm, lighting the underside of the stone and leaving the drone's main body untouched.

Burning secretion catches only the sample arm while the drone stays above the slab.

They recalled it with material still on the sampler. The arm was singed and probably usable; the encounter had not destroyed the drone. The heat had been compared to a campfire, but the way the substance adhered gave that comparison no comfort. Kari set the recovered residue into the chem deck.

Meanwhile, the other drone showed an almost perfectly circular tunnel with a flat path made from paired composite plates. Small tooling marks survived on the walls. The bore curved and sloped into the mountain, and the rock and bends steadily took away their radio link. Clauydio began turning one drone into a relay for the other.

They camped at the cave mouth rather than chase a failing signal into the dark. Watches and drone observation covered the night. Small flames appeared outside; yellow-faced Quintly moved through the surrounding ground. Nothing attacked the camp. By breakfast the relay was ready and the seal sample had supplied its first answer: sulfur-rich, and functionally like napalm.

Following the bore · Underground factory

The Road Inside the Mountain

Victor, Kari and Clauydio examining the unpowered alien boring factory

Jin took a vehicle back toward the Anne Bonny to collect Bob and more supplies. The return route proved less accommodating than the tunnel floor. Mud held the UTV where the forest gave way to marsh; there was no useful anchor close enough for the proposed pull. Two floor mats became traction material. They freed the vehicle and were lost to the job.

At the cave, Victor, Kari, and Clauydio sent the linked drones farther in. Each bend handed the signal from one position to the next. Smooth walls continued around them, the paired floor plates stayed level over a central support, and the bore followed the mountain instead of running straight out of it.

The forward camera found a stack of four or five slabs. Beyond them stood the machine that made the passage. Its broad circular body occupied the bore. It was old, stationary, and dark, with the flat plates leaving through an opening at the rear and two hoppers holding different powders.

The three went in to inspect it themselves, leaving the camp under the reconnaissance drone's watch. No familiar control console identified the manufacturer or explained its operation. A lip suggested an access panel, but finding an edge did not make the panel open. The fasteners held.

Kari sampled the blue powder from the right-hand hopper and ran it through the chem deck. The first result resembled carbon fiber, with a molecular structure that differed from their familiar material. She let the longer analysis continue and kept the other additive separate. Color had helped them choose a sample; it had not supplied its composition.

Kari tests the blue hopper sample beside the dark factory, with the red sample kept separately for later analysis at camp.

The road was exceptionally resistant to their crude hardness tests. The whole passage began to look useful for settlers: shelter, a durable floor, and a machine that had evidently been building the environment around itself. Beneath the central strip, electromagnetic interference suggested there was another part of that environment they had not yet exposed.

The covered conduit · An electrical accident

The Live End

Victor recoiling from a localized arc between disconnected power-cable ends

They worked at the center cover with drilling, leverage, and the vehicle winch. Clauydio helped turn a stubborn cover into something they could move. Under it lay a substantial cable, with two staggered ends disconnected near the machine. The line back toward the entrance was still live.

The connection appeared to be a twist-lock arrangement. Victor tried to handle it in the gloves of his environmental suit. Those gloves were not the electrical protection the task demanded. The arc came at his hands, and the commander lost consciousness while his contact with the live circuit held him there.

There was no breath and no pulse. Clauydio used the nonconductive winch line to pull him clear, taking the rescue out of the circuit before anyone tried to make it medical. Kari had the kit open and directed the work. The machine remained dark behind them.

Her emergency cardiac device used probes rather than ordinary adhesive pads. She applied it, restored his heartbeat, and supplied oxygen while Clauydio helped. The work had a sequence and a purpose, and for the next few moments both mattered more than the mountain's age or the cable's origin.

Kari resuscitates Victor with Clauydio assisting after pulling him clear using nylon line.

Victor survived with his hands intact, but the burned-through gloves had ruined his environmental suit. Kari continued monitoring him and giving fluids. The tracking implant had failed in the shock and would need replacement. A restored pulse was the beginning of care, not permission to put him back on the live connector.

They took Victor back to the cave-mouth camp by UTV. The longer chemical analysis finished there: the blue material was confirmed as a carbon-fiber analogue, and the red powder was a soft conductive alloy in the range of copper and aluminum, resembling material used in advanced cabling. The two hoppers were contributing different parts of an industrial process.

Jin returned to the camp with Bob, supplies, and the equipment the work had been missing. They briefed the mechanic before anyone made another attempt. Bob brought protective clothing and insulated tools for the connection that had nearly killed Victor. Kari replaced the failed tracker and kept the commander under observation.

They spent the night at the cave mouth. Victor rested while the others took watches. A passing Quintly left yellow residue that a watcher collected for Kari; its composition still had no answer. The next morning would give Bob room to work and Victor the recovery time his rescue had earned.

Restart and power tracing · Forest edge

The Other End of the Cable

The vine-covered geothermal power plant with its sweeping red exterior light

The next morning, Bob reconnected the supply in appropriate protection. Two red lights appeared on the factory, but it did not begin moving. Power had answered one question and left the controls behind the closed panel.

The fasteners resisted ordinary work. A grinder failed against them before Bob removed one of the magnetic cylinders and learned to use it on the others. Behind the panel were an unfamiliar connector and two physical controls, one hexagonal and one described as dodecahedral. One sat in; the other stood out.

He operated the controls cautiously. Red changed to yellow. A charging hum grew, then anchoring cylinders extended into the tunnel walls. The factory engaged the rock. What had looked abandoned began doing its job again.

It advanced at roughly an inch an hour and produced about one plate an hour. The completed slabs emerged at the rear and could tip down when nobody was there to handle them. The central cover and cable were part of the infrastructure it extended behind itself. Slow movement made the process observable; it did not explain who had ordered it or how long the order had waited.

The restarted machine processes rock and powders and discharges white composite slabs.

The crew left it running while they followed the stronger electrical signature back out. At the mouth, the trace turned along the base of the rock and toward the forest. A reconnaissance drone found a short, overgrown structure with a moving red light. The buried supply had another end.

They went on foot rather than force the UTVs through the vegetation. Vines occupied the old casing around a door only a few feet tall. The red scanner continued its sweep. The structure was a geothermal power plant, but knowing what it supplied did not yet make its interface human.

A magnetic rod recovered from the factory found a use at the entrance. Applied to the exterior recess, it released the small door. The connection between the two installations had just become more practical: a piece taken from one could open the other.

Inside the geothermal plant · Maintenance tools

Tools for Small Hands

The curved alien control room, unfamiliar keyboards, storage and ceiling ladder

The room followed the inside curve of the structure. Its consoles were low, its signs unfamiliar, and its ceiling gave an adult human little more than crouching room. Kari and Bob could inspect it in close quarters while the others waited or changed places at the entrance.

A ladder led to a port above, but the crew did not explore the upper level. Here were touch-sensitive surfaces, strange keyboards, shelves, and a warm enclosed atmosphere. The scale of the room echoed the low controls they had found on the mining machine. Whatever had used these tools had not required their height.

Kari photographed the keyboard and signage and gave the images to her computer. Pattern recognition suggested possible meanings. It did not produce a language they could trust. The symbols and the syntax still belonged to a system they had only just found.

Bob opened a portable case from storage. Inside were a screen and a small keyboard like the fixed consoles. Its cable ended in a connector that matched the unexplained port on the factory. A specialized rivet tool completed the kit. What they had improvised with the extracted magnetic rod now had an apparent purpose-built counterpart.

Bob and Kari inspect a portable alien maintenance computer, matching cable, and specialized rivet tool.

The case could be carried. Bob took it out toward the cave, where the factory was still running. They had not connected it to the machine yet, and nothing in the discovery guaranteed what its diagnostics would reveal. For the first time, though, the unexplained socket had a matching plug.

Kari watched a meter spike and heard activity deeper in the plant. Through a window in an inner door she could see a large opening in the ground releasing steam. She left that door closed. The geothermal power source had given them evidence without requiring another experiment with their bodies.

The survey ended with the machine working in the mountain, Victor alive, and the maintenance kit recovered. They had observed a food chain, brought back a sample of burning secretion, identified two manufacturing additives, and found the power behind a road. The next conversation with the factory could begin with the tools its makers had left beside it.
